Are we all Photographers ? Reflections on publishing photographs of the work of Álvaro Siza
BY NUNO GRANDE
Publications such as this allow us to breathe a sigh of relief and belleve in Photography as a reflective practice, carried out in a way that is independent from the editorial or gallery- based market, and here it is supported by a university publisher which uses financial means earmarked for this very purpose. The central pages of this book reveal to us the six visions of six buildings designed by Siza, sidestepping the most common clichés of the aforementioned “image-philia” that surrounds his work. Generally speaking, all the invited photographers portray these buildings based on their use, depicting the presence of users or signs of their passage or even random objects they might have left there.
